- Lake Superior has some very harmful chemicals that can be labeled as the “Nasty 9”. Four major families of this group are mercury, dioxin, PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls-man made chemicals), and persistent pesticides.
- It takes 191 years for water to flush out of lake superior, so whatever pollutants are in there stay for a long time.
- Not many people live by lake superior, about 70 people per square mile, but people still live on lake superior and pollution can be scattered around those small towns.
- Many of the chemicals that are in lake superior are from industries that are by the lake. They would either dump the chemicals into the lake or dump them on the land and the chemicals would runoff into the lake. Now there are fewer industries around the lake and have strict restrictions for waste disposal.
- There are also chemicals in the air that have come from us burning plastics, these chemicals can mix with rain and flow into the lake.
